i have a b18a1 thats been sittin around my shed for years. i stripped it completely. had dreams of building the heck out of it. just dont know what to do. so much to do with it. im an all motor kind of guy who loves high compression. i thought of civic type R pistons. vtec oil pump for the bottom end. 404's port and polish the head. shave it like as much as i can maybe .35ths. blox IM. a good header and a good catback exhaust system. dont know what brand to get, im going to do some other things like external coil. dont konw if that will help that much. but going for it. of course gauges. a/f, oil pressure. just wantin to know if you all think this will be good to build. or do something else with it. let me know. your ideas maybe better than mine

sounds like a solid setup, through in some arp rod bolts fresh bearings and gaskets and thats basically what i did for my motor (except its a b20)

milling the p75 head will do you good since it has some pretty deep quench pockets. P8R and b16 are much shallower (still not super quenchy like a GSR head but still). dont be afraid to mill, quench is a good thing as long as you understand what it does to the engine physically (with cam and ignition timing)

dont bother with ignition stuff, doesnt do much on hondas and guages are just fluff..

exhaust- something mandrell bent thats 2.5" with no baffles (ie straight though mufflers/resonator) will make the most power. getting the largest/best mufflers (not N1 style) in there will make it alot less loud.

theres a bunch of decent headers out there 300+ (DC 4-1 or a JG header being the minimum your going to want) i have a profab but theres rage, hytech knock offs, smsp, RMF all in the 400-700 range that are excelent headers. a non vtec motor simply doesnt breath well enough in most cases to warrant a better header than that unless you really want a one off hand tigged full SS piece.

I might also suggest JDM P30 pistons rather than CTR's, an LS will be under alot more stress with the extra weight of that piston at higher rpms and having a long stroke and poor rod/stroke ratio. Plus a flatter top piston is better for combustion, provided you can get the compression you need w/o going big on the dome.

Right now on HT there is a dude selling Rage tri-Y stainless brand new for $350, I'd strongly consider that. You won't find a better one for the money imo.

That's just my generic input but for any other non-VTEC specifics go with jcushing's advice & experience he won't steer you wrong!

ok thanks. that was just one of my main ideas. i have back up ideas i been thinking on. just dont know what to do there is so much. would it be neccesary for a lightened crank and fly wheel. or just stick to stock for now.

+1 on the b16 piston suggestion. CTR's are too much comp for the street and too heavy.

personally i use 84.5mm ITR clones from RS machines, they have a similar dome as the b16 but also have a anti friction coating on the skirts wich helps with the higher tendency of sideloading with LS cranks. you can get em from 81mm to 85mm

Yeah, I found that quite irritating to pay that much for cast pistons, but it was either that or shell $500 for forged that I didn't need and would have been more difficult to use with stock rods.

Also the 81 have quite a few more compression ratio options, the 84mm only have one.
