Hey, I just finished putting in my b18a1 into my eg8 civic.
When i go to start it, it turns... pops like it wants to start a few times...
Sometimes it will start after toying with the throttle and is very choppy
when i hit the gas it bogs down. When it warms up a few seconds,it seems to be running in
limp mode? idles @ 1100 rpm revs to 3000.It has pr3 pistons and rods,
1990 b18a1 block 1993 b18a1 head & cams. Stock wiring harness off
of my civic dx. I am running the p06 ecu. The #1 piston was set @ TDC and the cams i set
with the timing pin.

Thanks Matt

When you said pr3 pistons and rods, I hope you didn't stick the b16 rods in. B16 rod length: 5.290" and the b18a/b: 5.394"

Also switch that p06 to a pr4 or p75 ecu, hopefully it might help with your problem

Assuming you didnt use PR3 rods are you sure you have your firing order correct?

I did use the pr3 pistons with the pr3 rods as well.
What makes that an issue... I'm running a "8" cel, TDC sensor?
I have to pull the dizzy all the way back (to the firewall) to make
any attempt to start it.

your compression drops a little using the b16 rod. If you are throwing a tdc cell, check your timing. If it's dead on or they called it tdc, then your that sensor you are talking about is in your distributor. try to borrow a friend's distributor and see if that helps. If it does the it's your distributor.

with the # 1 cyl @ top dead center... and the cams lined up with those top pins.
Shouldn't timing be perfect?

did you check the line on the crank pulley (harmonic balancer) make sure it lines up with the lines on your cam gear. If you want use a timing gun to check.

where is the line on the crank pulley?
should it line straight upwards with the cam gears?

OKAY! so the motor turns over after a few cranks now. still a bit choppy. and still in limp mode
throwing code 4 and code 41 crankshaft positioning sensor, and primary oxygen sensor. code
41 i understand because i have no o2 sensor ( pre OBD exhaust manifold & downpipe), but the
code 4 , i do not understand. I believe I also need to switch my alternator as well (not giving back enough powah)
My distributor is OBD0, which i have converted to OBD1. Is this the source of my problems?

I think the code 4 literally boils down to a bad distributor.

As far as the mark on the crank pulley, it's just a tick mark, an engraving of sorts. It will line up with a pointer on the lower timing belt cover when #1 is @ TDC.

Please tell me you have the timing belt covers on?

If not, you should remove the crank pulley and on the timing belt pulley (crank snout) you'll see an engraved line. It should point to an arrow on the oil pump when #1 is @ TDC.

Just because the cams are aligned and appear @ TDC doesn't mean cylidner #1 is @ TDC when it should be.

if you are using obd-o distributor with obd-1 computer. thats a big step of your problem. what ever ecu you are using. run the matching dizzy for that ecu. obd-0 and 1 dont work together as of obd-1 and 2 do. that could be were your code 4 is coming from. and most times if you have your pistons at top dead center the harmonic balancer mark is close to being in the right spot. not always dead on but close. even that you should be running. maybe not to the best but you should rev ok from that point. but seriously get rid of that obd-0 dizzy if you are running a po6..............good luck.

okay, i have checked the tdc "tick" on the pulley and it lines up to the line (going towards the front cylinder?) on the bottom cam plastics. The cams are set to their
pins. When i am running the motor, it sounds like a diesel (although most of it probably is attributed to the fact that i am running only the headers/downpipe) still in limp mode and now throwing codes 41,4,15. you guys think it's the dizzy that is causing me problems?

most def. get that obd-o off and you should pretty much be ok other than your 02 problem

Get the car out of limp mode, fix the O2 sensor.

I don't have an o2 sensor on my manifold or downpipe. No openings or threading
Is that what is causing my limp mode?
