I had this same problem when we swapped a ZC head onto a D16A block, Check the Keyways and make sure that they are in all the way. Also make sure you put them in correctly.

ok ill check that...do you think the cams could be bent? i would think since they are a machined part that would kind of be hard to that...

Dude if you have a bent cam the cam would probably not even start because the lobes would be off and probably wouldn't push down the valves at all. Just check those keyways man and get back to us

Is it possible they arent tight?

Did you seat the cam, but pushing it all the way in as far as it would go against the distributor side of the engine?

Pull the cams and see if they're bent... try a new set of cams if you have too.

The cams are usually chill-cast iron, they don't really "bend" much. It's possible they could warp but generally when they start to bend they just snap. The keys should be a real tight fit in the keyway...do they go in very easily or loosely? That could mean they are reamed out somehow. And you're using the correct keys right?

yea the keys are fine and they go on the cam pretty snug too... the thing is that i have put my stock ls cams in and even some webb stage 3 cams in the head and the cam gears/timing belt never wobbled like that...thats why i think it is the cams

Can you get some plastiguage and check clearances with the cam journals to the bores in the head? Maybe something has too much play in it. If the cam was bent I think it would just bind up when you torqued the caps down then tried to crank it over.

Thats what I was thinking but it is possible something else might have too much play in it I never thought of that.
