..Not sure if this is the right thread for this but here it goes...

My car has an alpine head unit, mtx amp, and 2 alpine 10" type S. In changing out head units I cant use my subs anymore. I have power to the amp but all that happens is the subs suck in and puff out and there is a funny smell that comes from the amp as well as it getting hot. I suspect that either there is a short in the amp or its burnt out. Just was wondering if anyone has had experience in this or knew anything that might help out.

I don't really care for Alpine products. I think they are mostly riding on reputation now, anyway sorry to hear about the bad luck :(

The smell is a bad sign, there is probably damage done to the amp at this point. Take a ohmmeter and check to see if the subs are still ok. double check your wiring and start swapping out parts, perhaps the amp first. Unless you have a 12V power supply to test the amp separate from your car system - that would be ideal.

I ended up taking it into tweeter before anything else went wrong and they said my amp was blown for sure and that the subs were on their way out. Id rather have the amp go i guess, less moeny to blow at one time. Guess this summer will be me buying a whole new audio system, thanks for the help anyway..

Correct me...but how did you take it into "tweeter" ....tweeter is a form of speaker (plays highs)

Not sure how i would take my car to be looked at by a speaker....and yes tweeter is a car and home audio shop. I thought it was a chain store, maybe not. Its just like a best buy or circut city.

that was what i thought you were talking about when you said tweeter. i have heard of the store but i thought they only did home audio type stuff or last i knew of anyway which was like 3 years ago so that is why i thought it might just be some local shop around you. but yes it is a chain store. anyway... that really sucks.

Tweeter is a Car Audio/Home Theatre Company. They are big up here in MA, in fact one of the better places to get audio/video stuff. They have a good rep. Just to let everyone know.
