vehicle is a 89 ED hatch with a b18 ls engine swap, and a obd0-obd1 harness conversion/ecu jumper harness.

symptom is a dead cylinder in cyl 1. basically i pull the spark plug cable and there's not a drop in idle, nothing nada zip.

so far this is what i have done in order to pinpoint why i have a dead cylinder.

1. rechecked the ignition and so far there are no loose/pinned wires. it also reads 12v. EDIT: the only part at fault on the ignition was the ICM, and was replaced with a new fresh unit.

2. checked resistance on spark plug cables (ok)

3. checked for proper voltage on injectors and they read 12.3v

4. changed the ecu for the oem one and still the same symptoms

5. changed the icm (it was bad)

6. took out the header, cranked the engine without fuel and spark and see if exhaust valves are working properly. a visual inspection tells me that yes, they are.

7. checked if main relay is working properly. (ok)

8. took the fuel rail off and checked if all injector were pulsing and dispensing fuel (ok)

9. checked for spark at the spark plug cables (ok)

10. checked tps (need to replace)

11. tested cyl1 with another spark plug cable. same thing.

12. changed the injector in cyl1 to cyl2 and vice-versa and the symptom didn't moved to cyl2.

13. checked all fuses and they are ok.

thing is that there is clanking or thumping sound coming from the head. i've read a couple articles that this sound could come from a mechanical misfire... a rounded lobe of a cam? i remember that when i adjusted the valves, the ones on the exhaust at cyl1 were almost impossible to adjust... they're somewhat still loose. so could that be? does any of you had that problem before, a worn/rounded cam?

Check the intake valves. Also valves could chip.

what i suspected. i was having a misfire of mechanical origin. swapped in the oem cams and now the engine is good to go.

seems that the exhaust cam was to blame. bent or twisted? bad regrind? i really can't answer that question, but cyls 2-4 aligned except cyl1 :scratcheshead:
