So i got in a little race with a 99 Si today. He had a the basic stuff done IHE, suspention not too much done. Well needless to say I smoked him. The little B16 had no chance. I have been wanting to run against a 99-00 Si for a while now to see if I could take one. When the race was over he asked me if I had a B16 and what was done to my car. He couldnt believe it when I told him I have a non Vtec B18. He was like "Dam you car is bad a$$". Told him it really isnt, mostly stock. I love the torque. Hp sells cars torque wins races.

The b16 really shines when it is turboed. But a properly tuned b18 screams laps around a stock B16

What does vtec really give you? They say more hp but doesn't my b18 make hp quicker? Meaning a b16 makes 160ish hp at lets say 8,000 rpms, 110 ft lbs tq at um 6,000 or so rpms... and my hp is at 140ish at 6,500 and 127 ft lbs tq at around 4- 5,000 rpms, isn't all that revving wasting time? and since I make horse power and more torque quicker is my car more powerful? I'm just curious and I know my numbers aren't right but you get the idea.

vtec gives you the ability to make more power up top without sacrificing gas milage down low (really has two cam profiles inside the motor)

and i see your point how you make the power quicker and everything and thats true...but the higher you rev a motor up, the more you stay in the powerband (with right transmission)...torque does win races, which the b16 lacks...

you do make more power (in stock forum) here is something to think about...my buddy had a stock block ls with a stock gsr head with I/H/E and it made 171whp at like 8200... (equivalent is 200 crank hp = stock ITR) by introducing the vtec head to a non vtec block, you get the torque and the higher powerband so that you can stay in it longer...its kinda hard to explain but i hope you get the idea...vtec is made to make power up top to make up for the lack of displacement (compared to v8's)

Honda tried to narrow the gap for the B16 make only top end power and no torque, by giving it a short geared trans. But it really didnt help to much. All that really did is give us Ls lovers alot of short geared Si tranys to bolt to our B18s and B20s. I would also pick a B18a/b over a B16 any day.
