Some shops are not capable of removing valve guides. Valve guides are cast into the head from factory. In order for them to be removed the shop places it in an oven designed for this heats the head up then they use liquid nitrogen to freeze the guides. We know heating metal makes it expand and freezing it makes it contract therefore the guides once frozen can be pressed out. I have been told unless the motor has over 300k miles there's really no need to do this or unless there is actually a problem with one example being breaking a valve and such. Hope this helps.

We use a valve guide remover by air. If that fail, then we use a ball tip punch and a hammer to remove it. Most of the machine shop does it that way first.
